hutspot plays a groovy fabric of joyful noise, a non-stop trip, a kaleidoscopic roller coaster that will make your body move and your mind expand.

hutspot improvises psychedelic rockjazz with prepared ideas, melodies, grooves, etc. Hand gestures, musical cues, and spontaneous choices are used to shape & structure the music. The result sounds like what might happen if Miles Davis’s electric bands play Anthony Braxton pieces at a techno rave.

Drummer and composer Robbert van Hulzen has been working on this approach for nearly a decade – in many forms, creating music incorporating the musical backgrounds of the bandmembers-of-the-moment in many places, making this a truly intercultural collaboration. In the winter of 2018, he used the name hutspot for the first time, for gigs in India (see videos below) involving long-term collaborator Maarten Visser on saxophones, and bassists Aalaap Raju from Chennai and Mainak “Bumpy” Nag Chowdury from Calcutta.

Robbert also teaches a workshop on the hutspot approach, see or download more info.
