Robbert van Hulzen’s fascination with colour extends from his hat collection to his use of percussive sounds. Drawing inspiration from a wide variety of sources, including his studies of ethnomusicology (Universitiy of Amsterdam & SOAS, London), jazz drumming (with Steve Clover), contemporary improvised and composed music (Conservatory of Amsterdam) and South Indian music (with MT Rajakesari and BC Manjunath in Bangalore), he takes his drumming beyond a mere timekeeping function.
He plays and played in a variety of settings, including new/early/improv music duo Rara Avis with recorder player Terri Hron, theatre group De Maan, modern gamelan ensemble Gending, rock group Most Unpleasant Men, the Bastiaan Woltjer Quartet (jazz) and projects of composer Merlijn Twaalfhoven. He also plays for modern dance.
