Rara Avis is Czech Canadian Terri Hron (recorders, electronics) and Dutchman Robbert van Hulzen (drums etc, electronics). Having met in the Amsterdam music world, Terri and Robbert started Rara Avis in 2004 with the aim of exploring and enjoying both the clashes and the common ground of their respective sound worlds.
During her existence, Rara Avis has regularly initiated insiring collaborations with other musicians from various fields, including guitarist Alfredo Genovesi, singer Camille Hesketh, drummer Chris Dadge, trumpet player Hans Leeuw, contrabassist Jelte van Andel, guitarist/electronician Juan Parra Cancino, bassguitarist Luc Ex, recorder- and shakuhachi player Nancy Beckmann, flautist Ned McGowan, wind player/electronician Peter Hannan and guitarist Ron Samworth.
In bridging the awesome gap between the recorder and percussion, Rara Avis also bridges the medieval world and the postmodern, creating a quirky soundworld of noise-rimmed folk songs and atonal estampies that sounds like it never existed, but should have.
Kyle Gann about the album One Fell Swoop (2008)
Both performers work and play exceptionally well with tone color. The percussion playing conveys a strong sense of melodic contour. Using a range of instruments, from C bass to soprano, the recorder playing creates a rich timbral palette.
Tom Bickley about One Fell Swoop in American Recorder
Rinus van der Heijden about One Fell Swoop on jazzenzo.nl
